The interface you see is easy to use, but finding all the features is not that intuitive. This is a program you really need to sit down with and actually read the manual. Look for the "learn" function (so you can use their sounds with your own midi loops). One thing though - I found it is VERY easy to train AD to follow any other drum machine you may own (I have an Alesis SR16) and now I can "play" that drum machine to trigger AD drums sets and that sound is (forgive me) AWESOME!. You can buy specific ad-paks for your style and probably get a lot of usable loops for you. But the ad-paks also include a lot of additional loops. I don't use the loops, but I agree with you that the AD loops were surprisingly limiting, especially the fills.

Is this going to be possible with the full program? Or do I need to look at more extensive and more expensive programs to achieve this? Maybe Superior Drummer? What program would have the best, largest and most complex library of beats, fills and patterns? I am a guitar player and not a drummer so I cannot write these beats myself and was hoping that there would be a HUGE library of beats, fills and patterns that I could choose from and tweak for my own recordings. I want to be able to use a drum program for ANY style of music, and ANY time signature I want to be able record and utilize drum patterns for everything from blues, mainstream jazz, rock to jazz fusion, with drum patterns similar to what players like Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, etc. I know it will take some time to learn and tweak things for personal taste but as it is, it doesn't sound any better than my simple drum machine. The drum patterns they provide are so basic that they are almost useless and there is no way of knowing how many more will be provided with the full program and how much better they will be. In fact so limiting that (for me) it may hurt sales. I find the demo far too limiting to get a good feel for the program and what it can do. I had sort of decided that I would get Addictive Drums, until I downloaded and played with the demo. I have recorded tons of real drum sets in my studio, but felt it was time to start using other methods for my own projects and possibly others.

First I will say that while I have 40 years experience in music and recording, I am a newbie when it comes to these drum software programs.

Okay, I thought I should download and try the demo before I purchase AD, which I did yesterday. I guess there are cheaper versions of AD out there now, but the number of sets you get is even more limited.

At $249 plus $59 just for the limited percussion it is not the bargain of the century. Its a trade off - great but limited sounds, or cheaper price with less good sounds but more variety. But the drums sound amazing, like real drums with lots of loops, etc. It really sucks, I do not know why they made that part so lame. Yeah, I you want perc and you use AD you have to figure out a way to get it from general midi and use a completely separate plugin.

However, when I bought the perc pack today I also got Peavey Revalver and Izotope Nektar for free (thats a pretty good deal) This and the price is the AD's biggest drawback. I just added the "percussion add-in ($59) and all you get as extra is a tambourine, congas, and a wood block.
They are great sounding drums, but the only percussion you get with the regular set is one cowbell. The percussion is VERY limited, its biggest drawback. Drums on tape just sound better. You can only use THEIR samples with AD, and they are very good but limited. Is it really worth all that effort? If you want vibrant, organic, punchy and warm with just the right amount of grit. Third, you run it through a beautiful old desk, and they don't come much more majestic than "The Queen", a Neve 8048 console with 1081, 10 preamps, that was once owned by Queen themselves, and which has been used by rock royalty like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones.įinally, you capture the beautiful sounds distilled through this process on a Studer A80 2" Tape Machine. From the outboard, and microphones to old Steinway uprights and rare Fender amps to Fairchild compressors and Pultec EQ's, every piece of equipment you normally only see emulated in a plugin, is there in real life. Second, you enlist the help of their impressive collection of vintage gear, and if you want old school, Svenska Grammofon has a lot. How do you get that warm beautiful analogue indie sound in a digital drum production software? You go proper old school:įirst you take it to Svenska Grammofon Studion's warm, organic 120m2 live room, with 10m high walls covered in old fashioned oak tiles, giving the room the kind of short, rich decay that's perfect for drums.
